The Opening of Access Ways to BomFuturo Preserve
In May 2004 BomFuturo and Parque Nacional do Pantanal agreed upon the first joined action aiming to activate access ways to the area.
The Brazilian company CIFI is funding this action, which will take shape through the collaboration with Parna’s local experts in the month of July.
The waterway approach was chosen to get close to the area: navigation with small boats will follow the upstream of Caracará River from the Park’s headquarters.
Caracará River has an average width of 6 meters and in recent times its bed suffered non-native aquatic plants invasion which partially obstructed its flow. The Caracará itself forms a long bordering line for the National Park and its closest flowing point to Bomfuturo Preserve is about 4 km away from the South Eastern border of our reserve.
The first part of the action is consisting in cleansing the stream waters from the non-endemic aquatic plants up to this point. Here a watching tower for fire prevention should be erected in the future: this will be particularly useful in sight of the devastating fire threats. Just before the beginning of the rainy period the fires set by ranchers and farmers to clear the land and pastures in the region can cause heavy damages to Pantanal’s ecosystems.
The primary aim of this action is anyway to open up a track to an old facility (small shelter and the landing field) in the BomFuturo Preserve, which should then be restored for the accommodation of naturalists and researchers visiting the area for scientific purposes.
