Rivers
The Rio Paraguay, fifth largest river in South America and tributary to the Rio Paraná, is the only river that has its sources outside the region. All other rivers in the Pantanal are included in its basin, to form an intricate and complex network. Among the most important are Rio Cuiabá, Vermelho, São Lourenço, Itiquira, Taquari and Rio Miranda.
The Rio Paraguay is also the only out-let for both the still and the slow running waters of the region.
